The Norwegian Media Authority is subject to the Ministry of Culture, which provides the framework for our tasks in a yearly allotment letter. Our primary tasks are these:

  • We supervise the broadcaster responsibilities of NRK (national broadcaster), TV 2, P4 and Radio Norge (commercial broascasters)
  • We supervise television- and radio channels to make sure that they follow the broadcasting legislation  in concerns of advertising, sponsorship and prohibition against violence and pornography in broadcasting
  • Providing licenses and follow up on the conditions for conducting and transmitting local radio
  • Oversee the concession conditions for digital TV’s nationwide network.
  • Provide age ratings for all films screened in cinema
  • Acquire knowledge of media use among children and adolescents
  • Guiding children and adolescents in use of digital media
  • Process applications and disburse financial aid for national newspapers
  • Process applications for aid to run local radio and local television
  • To stay on top of media development and provide advice and suggestions to the Ministry of Culture within the media field
  • To manage and serve as a member of several media-related councils and committees, and manage support schemes in the media field
