Children and young people are active on social media, which offers access to information and social communities—but also to harmful content and manipulative design. 7 out of 10 Norwegian children aged 9 to 12 are on social media, despite the age limit being 13.

New European regulations, particularly the Digital Services Act (DSA), place greater responsibility on social media platforms to protect their youngest users:

  • Strong privacy and safety protections
  • A ban on behaviour-based marketing targeting users under 18
  • Enforced age limits through age verification on social media and services intended for adults
  • Easier processes for appealing content or account removals, and for reporting illegal content
  • Norwegian authorities can require platforms to remove content that is illegal under Norwegian law
